Royal jelly is produced by pharyngeal glands of young worker bees, from 5th to 14th day of life. It has a consistency of dense cream, white colour with a pearl shade and a specific, slightly sour taste. All larvae in the bee family up to 3 days old and larvae from which queen bees are formed up to 5 days old are fed with royal jelly in a very substantial amount.

How is it that from the same fertilised egg after 21 days a worker bee is formed, a female which is incapable of fertilisation and laying eggs and from another egg only after 16 days is formed a considerably bigger, in addition fully developed female, able to fertilise and lay eggs.    

The worker bee lives for about 30 days and the queen for 4-6 years, maximally even up to 10 years, laying during this time up to 2000 eggs a day in a fertile period.
